Play with a controller

1. On the Xbox, open Microsoft Edge (it's in My games & apps; install it from the Store if it isn't there).
2. Go to this site's address and open the Hangout, Planet X or a venue.
3. Press any button: the controller takes over from the pointer, and the button hints appear at the bottom of the screen.
4. Sign in if you want to be seen by everyone, emote and chat (guests can walk and watch). Signing in opens in Edge as on any computer.

TV mode (larger text) is on by default on an Xbox. If a page needs the pointer (clicking places on the 3D globe), turn on “Use the stick as a mouse pointer” in the controller menu; reload the page to get the controller back.

Any controller the browser sees as a standard gamepad works: Xbox controllers, PlayStation (DualSense, DualShock 4) and most other standard controllers, over USB or Bluetooth, in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. On a phone, pair a Bluetooth controller in the phone's settings first. Press any button on the site: the hints show that controller's own button names.

The mouse, keyboard and touch keep working as before: use whichever you like, and the hints step aside when you do.

Left stick

Move. Looking around, push it to start walking.

Right stick

Camera. On a page or a list: scroll.

L3 (press the left stick)

Run (or push the stick all the way).

A

Interact, sit, step up to a game, confirm, press the button in focus.

B

Back: stop walking, close a card or sheet, stop playing, go back a page.

X

Your emote (wave, dance, clap, thumbs up, laugh, sit).

LB / RB

Pick the emote. At a venue while looking around: step through the camera spots.

Y

Chat (the console's on-screen keyboard opens).

RT / LT

At a show: cheer and the glow stick. In darts and golf: hold RT to steady, let go to throw or putt.

D-pad

Move between the buttons on screen. In darts and golf: fine aim.

PlayStation names: A is ✕, B is ○, X is □, Y is △, LB / RB are L1 / R1, LT / RT are L2 / R2, Menu is Options, View is Create. Scoring is the same whichever way you play.

• The button in focus has a gold ring; the D-pad moves it, A presses it, B closes whatever is open.
• “TV mode: larger text” in the controller menu makes text and buttons bigger for the sofa.
• Chat and any text box open the on-screen keyboard when you press A on them (Y opens chat in a world place).
• VR headsets use their own controllers; the gamepad steps aside while a VR session is on.

Press Menu (Start) anywhere on the site for the controller menu:

• Invert camera up / down: for players who push up to look down.
• Camera speed: 0.5× to 2×.
• Vibration: a small rumble when you cheer, throw a dart or emote, where the controller and browser support it.
• TV mode: larger text.
